Clarity
Alright, let’s clear this up….
1) HPR. It’s true, I was not technically a founder of the paper. I was actually still an editor at the student paper when my friends started the alt-weekly started. I officially started working on the paper in the first couple months. I tend to say I was there at the beginning because I actually was working with them from the start, waiting for my days at the student paper to end. I don’t think anyone in the community would question my role there — it completely consumed my life for a couple years. There were only two of the original four remaining when we sold it to a local publisher for $150k.
2) Web Guide. It was located in Loring Park in Minneapolis, across the park from the Utne Reader. It was a large mainstream national glossy, usually sitting on the magazine rack next to something called Yahoo Internet Life. We had a staff of six. I was the editor, with a capital stake.
3) Housing. Hundreds of people under 35 in Minneapolis have been to my old house. It’s the top floor of the first house the Pillsbury’s built. It wasn’t intended to sound palatial — it’s only probably 900 square feet. Footnote: I still own my condo in downtown Seattle, if anyone is looking to buy in the Northwest.
4) Pulitzer. Yes, I was part of a team that won the Pulitzer. It was just an anecdote, and I wasn’t trying to take undue praise.
5) Family. I have two nieces and zero nephews.
6) Beer. I’m a bud man.
I think that covers it!
