What exactly does Rex Sorgatz do?

I wish not to answer specifically, I leave that to him. But in the interest of providing fascinating information to the masses: he does have an actual career and it is fascinating stuff. And while we’re here being sincere about Rex: he is such a good sport about all of the remarks about him, provoked or not, that many of you don’t deserve to have him.

Just to really melt your brains, this was part of a really interesting conversation I had last night with Nick Douglas, who also is a better man than you deserve.

Hah! Does it really seem like I don’t do anything? Ask Rina, I work 70 hours a week!

Let me — as usual; ask Bakes — take this query entirely too seriously:

I have an internet consulting company that does product strategy/development for media companies, startups, and consumer brands. In the past year, my clients have included Newsweek, Mediaite, SNL, IFC, CitySearch, MAC, iVillage, and three unrelated startups that will be announced in February. What do I actually do for these companies? Everything from brand strategy to product development to business development. But more than anything else, I make digital things. (For all three startups, it’s building the entire company from scratch: design, platform, product, marketing, everything. Sometimes I take equity, sometimes it’s just $$$. Yes, because people ask, I’m also producing the three new Mediaite sites.)

At this moment, by far the most time-consuming client is Major League Soccer, for whom I am relaunching their digital strategy, which includes everything from redesigning all of their websites (they need it!) to finding them new office space in SoHo for their brand new digital operations unit that I’m helping them build.

I sometimes write and blog, but no one makes money off that. I’m trying to write a novel, but I’ve been trying to write a novel for 15 years, and it makes me want to kill myself.

Similarly, I talk about leaving New York every single day.

So glad you asked!
